What is Variable Data Printing (VDP)?

Variable Data Printing (VDP) is a digital printing method that automatically changes certain elements from one label to the next on the same print sheet, without the need for manual updates. The variable information is typically pulled from a data source such as a spreadsheet (CSV/Excel) or a database, while the rest of the label design stays the same making it ideal for asset tracking, inventory, and product identification.

On barcode labels, that usually means you can print unique:

  • Barcodes (e.g each label has a different barcode)
  • Serial numbers or asset IDs
  • Product codes (SKUs)
  • Names, locations, or batch/lot numbers
  • QR codes or variable codes
