About Stan Avery
Stan Avery (also known as Ray Stanton Avery) is widely known as an inventor and as the founder of Avery Products. Stan invented the very first self adhesive label in 1935. He subsequently started the Avery business which has since grown into the global leader for adhesive products. That’s right - every single one of the thousands of labels and stickers you see wherever you go exist thanks to Stan Avery’s invention. To cut a long story short - Stan led a noteworthy life and here are just a few interesting facts about the man:
- He made the world’s first ever self-adhesive label machine with a $100 investment from his future wife & parts from a washing machine motor, a sewing machine, and an electric saw.
- His business philosophies were known by his employees as Avery’s laws. One of the most memorable was “When you stop making mistakes, you’re in deep trouble.”
- One of his early business ventures was selling smoked Tahitian bananas – needless to say, selling labels proved to be more fruitful (pun intended).
Thanks to Stan’s efforts, today Avery is proud to be at the forefront of the labelling business and is renowned worldwide as an innovator. The fact that we essentially invented labels and have been developing and manufacturing them for over 90 years, is a testament to the quality and reliability that we have always been known for, and that you can continue to expect from us!
